This is a general guide to opening a Bosch EDC/MED ECU. Some of these ecu's vary both in size and shape, However they are all opened using the same principles.

The primary goal is to leave no evidence of opening

Step 1

Place the ecu on a suitable surface and in an area free from dust and dirt. Remove all of the retaining bolts holding the cover on.

Step 2

Heat up all the edge's of the ecu but remembering to stay away from the plastic edge connector as you do not want to melt it! Keep the heat gun moving all the time to avoid overheating an area. Also you can see in (image 2) that below where indicated is a larger area which is bonded directly to the circuit board. You will need to apply some heat to this as well to release it.

Step 3

Now use a suitable tool to lift up the corner of the cover and place another tool in the corner as instructed. Now you have the other tool in the very corner of the cover lift it up and place your plastic (not metal) lever underneath the edge of the cover but be sure not to push it too far into the ecu to avoid damaging any components inside. Once you have done this leave your lever where it is - (see image)

Step 4

Use the same technique to lift the opposite corner but again Do Not push your tool too far into the ecu and only place the tip of your lever onto the edge(See Images) Now would be a great time to check that the tip of both levers are only just holding the cover as shown.

Step 5

You can now slowly push (slide) both levers towards the opposite side of the ecu whilst looking through the gap in the ecu to make sure that the grey sealant is lifting from the circuit board, usually you will spot a split in the sealant slowly travel along the bead until all of it has come away from the board at this point you can lift it completely of and away from the ecu maintaining a steady hand and not scratching the ecu in the process. If the sealant is not coming away from the board then apply some heat to the back of the cover (not inside the ecu!)

Step 6

Now that the grey sealant has cracked all the way along, you can now apply slight pressure to lift the ecu cover off. Once off visually inspect the PCB for any signs of damage, dirt or water ingress.

Step 7

Now the ECU is ready to programme.

Step 8

Once you have tuned your ECU, be sure to inspect it for any damage/dust or dirt before re-sealing it and placing the cover back on.
