This is a guide only to be followed entirely at your own risk.

This process can differ depending upon which type of ECU it is you are opening but this is a general guide to opening a style of Bosch ECU found on BMW, Volvo and Mercedes, we recommend you follow this procedure carefully as this is one of the more difficult ECU to open without damaging. It is extremely important that if you are doing this for the first time you must be patient. aN experienced operator will take around 25-30 minutes to open this ECU! As with all things chip tuning / ECU Remapping related you must take your time and focus on the process in order of events to avoid any problems.

Process and focus, organize the correct tools - note* use the correct type silicon sealant, gloves and a protective pad to prevent scratching of the ECU casing.

The primary goal is to leave no evidence of opening.

Step 1

Remove all of the bolts holding the Ecu casing together

Step 2

(It is advised that you wear safety gloves that can withstand heat as the ecu will be very hot to touch after this point). Now use a heat-gun to gently heat up the rim around the outside of the ecu, as shown in the picture. Be-careful not to get to close or melt the plastic edge connector plug! However you must heat up the edge's enough for it to soften up the bonding as you want it to open nice and easy so its not to put any stress on the other components in the ecu. With alot of Bosch ecu's there is an area on the circuit board which it is bonded directly from the lid of the ecu to the board. This area needs to be heated up at the same time as heating up the edge's. You can see this grey bonded area in the picture shown. Some ecu's can have upto 3 areas which will need heating up to release the bonding.

Step 3

Now that you have got the edge's of the ecu nice and hot, prize open the ecu being careful not to slip and let your tool scratch the circuit board or damage the ecu casing. You must take your time and re-apply heat to the edge's if necessary. Once the ecu is open follow the on-screen instructions for the diagram (pin layout) to connect to the circuit board.

Step 4

Inspect the ECU to determine is the required boot pins/pads are present consult your tooling to ECU guide in this process. If the pads/boot pins are the blind side of the ECU then step 4 and extra care onward is required...

Remove board retain screws

Step 5

Now place the cover back onto the ecu and turn it over onto its opposite side. There are 3 areas that are bonded to directly to the circuit board and all of these need to be heated up prior to pulling the board away from the ecu casing. In the image the ecu has already been opened but when opening it fr the first time you must where heat proof gloves. You will need to apply quite a lot of heat (within reason) to be able to pull the board away so don't be scared but at the same time do not go crazy. You can gently lever the edge's of the circuit board to help free it off but be very very careful! If you have never opened one of these before then i'd recommend buying a cheap second hand damaged one and practicing on that first. If you feel you cannot remove it then you can raise a support ticket on the server and send the ecu to us.

Step 6

Remember you must inspect the board for damage/dust or dirt before re-seal and re-assemble.
